To save your own Twitch replay, use Video Producer in the Creator Dashboard. For a short moment, check the Clip’s sharing and download controls first. A channel link, a replay link and a Clip link are different inputs: choosing the right one saves a lot of failed attempts.
For a long replay you have permission to keep, TwitchDownloader offers a desktop workflow with quality selection and time trimming. On a phone, saving the file and adding it to Photos are separate steps. A shared Twitch link alone is not an offline copy.
Choose the right way to save a Twitch video
| Your goal | Start here | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Back up your own broadcast | Twitch Video Producer | VOD storage was enabled before streaming |
| Save a short Clip | Clips Manager / Share | Your role and available download options |
| Keep part of a long public replay | TwitchDownloader | Working VOD URL, permission and free disk space |
| Keep the chat too | Separate chat download | Chat is not automatically part of the video |
Use the official route first for your own channel. It avoids installing a downloader and makes it clear which recording you are saving. TwitchDownloader is useful when you need a specific time range or a separate chat archive, rather than another subscription just to download a file.
A replay URL normally contains /videos/ followed by a number. A Clip URL may use clips.twitch.tv or a channel path containing /clip/. Copy the individual item’s share link, not the live channel homepage. Save your own material or content the creator permits you to keep; permission to watch is not automatically permission to repost.
Download your own Twitch replays
Before your next stream, open Creator Dashboard → Settings → Stream and turn on Store past broadcasts under VOD Settings. This is a web setting; enabling it after a stream cannot recreate an unsaved broadcast.
Already have the recording? Follow these steps on a computer:
- Sign in to the account that owns the channel and open Creator Dashboard → Content → Video Producer.
- Find the past broadcast by date and title. Open its three-dot menu and choose Download.
- Allow time for a long recording to prepare, then choose the destination when your browser offers it. If it opens as a playable video, use the browser player’s download control or Save video as option.
- Open the saved file, check its duration, then jump near the beginning, middle and end. Keep a second copy before removing anything from Twitch.
Standard past broadcasts last 7 days; Affiliates get 14 days; Partners, Prime and Turbo users get 60 days. The official guide separately limits the 2K or vertical version to 7 days, even where the remaining 1080p or horizontal copy lasts longer. Highlights and uploads share a 100-hour quota; they are not an unlimited substitute for a local backup.

Save Clips with Twitch’s official controls
A Clip is a short excerpt, not the complete broadcast. Twitch’s Clips Manager distinguishes clips of your channel from clips you created on other channels. Its official guide documents downloads for both groups; that does not mean every viewer sees a download button on every clip.
Open the relevant clip in Clips Manager, use Share, and look for Download. Select landscape or portrait if both versions are available. If portrait is missing and you can edit that clip, open Edit Clip, adjust its portrait layout and save it; allow the new version to finish rendering before downloading.
To make a new clip, open the clip icon on the stream or replay, select the moment, give it a title and publish it. The channel must allow clipping and you must meet its access rules. Creating a clip publishes a Twitch item; downloading that item is a separate action. Keep a landscape copy for gameplay context and use portrait only when the crop retains the important action.

Use TwitchDownloader for long VODs and chat
TwitchDownloader is a free, open-source project, separate from Twitch. Its Windows graphical app supports VODs, Clips and chat; macOS and Linux users can use the command-line version. Choose the package matching your operating system and architecture from the project’s Releases page, rather than a download advertisement or an unrelated installer.
For an available public video you are allowed to save, the Windows workflow is:
TwitchDownloader documentation · Download releases

- Extract the Windows GUI release and launch the app. Open VOD Download for a replay, or Clip Download for a Clip.
- Paste the individual URL or ID and load its information. Check the channel, title and duration before proceeding.
- Choose the available quality. For a VOD, use Trim to set a start and end time if you only need a segment; review the estimated file size and output folder.
- Start Download and wait for processing to finish. Play the resulting file before transferring or editing it.
A 60 fps source, 2K version or portrait layout cannot be invented by selecting a higher setting. If a video requires access you do not have, ask the creator for a copy. Do not paste your Twitch password, cookies or access token into a random download website.
On macOS or Linux, follow the project’s installation and FFmpeg instructions first. This documented command pattern saves a VOD; replace VOD_ID with the numeric ID of your permitted recording. On Windows CLI, use TwitchDownloaderCLI.exe instead of ./TwitchDownloaderCLI.
./TwitchDownloaderCLI videodownload --id VOD_ID -o replay.mp4 If the reactions matter, run Chat Download separately and keep its JSON for later rendering, or HTML/text for reading. A downloaded MP4 does not automatically include Twitch’s chat panel. For an edited excerpt, use matching time ranges so that chat and video do not drift apart.
Find saved videos on iPhone and Android
iPhone or iPad
Use Safari to open an eligible official download, or transfer the completed file from a computer. A desktop-site request may help expose web controls, but it does not grant download permission. For a multi-hour VOD, the computer-first route is usually easier to manage.
In Files, check Browse → iCloud Drive → Downloads or On My iPhone → Downloads, depending on Safari settings. Open the file and use Share → Save Video if offered to add it to Photos. If that option is absent, keep it in Files or use a compatible player; downloading does not guarantee Photos compatibility.
Find downloads on iPhone or iPad
Android
Open an eligible download in Chrome, then check its menu → Downloads or your file manager’s Download folder. A video need not appear in the gallery immediately. Open the actual file and verify playback before deleting the source or another copy.
Use Wi-Fi for long VODs, check free storage and let the transfer finish. If mobile web controls are missing or a large download repeatedly fails, save it on a computer and transfer the finished file by USB or your usual cloud storage.
Fix missing videos, failed downloads and silent audio
No replay appears
Check Video Producer and whether storage was enabled before the stream. An unpublished recording and a recording that was never saved are different cases. An expired, deleted or unsaved VOD is not restored by trying more download sites.
The download stays at “preparing”
Long replays can take time. Keep one attempt running rather than repeatedly creating more jobs. Check storage and connection; if it fails, verify the original still plays and try the official route again or the current TwitchDownloader release.
There is no sound in one section
Muted source audio stays muted in the download. Changing MP4 settings cannot recover audio that Twitch does not provide. A creator’s own original recording is the best source for an intact backup.
Only a tiny file, webpage or unplayable file was saved
You may have saved the page or a streaming playlist instead of the completed video. Check the filename, file size and download status. Copy the individual VOD/Clip URL again and select the correct downloader mode.
Frequently asked questions
Can I download someone else’s Twitch replay?
The creator’s Video Producer controls are not a universal viewer download button. For an available replay you have permission to keep, a compatible downloader may work; private, subscriber-only or deleted content is not made public by a tool. Ask the creator when access or reuse is unclear.
Does Prime or Turbo provide offline downloads of every channel?
No. The longer VOD retention benefit concerns the broadcaster’s own saved broadcasts. It is not a blanket offline library or a license to export other channels’ material.
Can I save just ten minutes of a long VOD?
Use TwitchDownloader’s VOD trimming controls for a permitted recording. A ten-minute excerpt is different from Twitch’s short Clips feature. Review both cut points and any audio/video sync before editing further.
Will downloading a Clip keep it online forever?
No. A local copy and the Twitch-hosted Clip are separate. Keep a useful filename and source link alongside your backup; the original online item can change or be removed.
Are free online downloaders the easiest option?
They can be convenient for a public short clip, but availability and advertising vary. Start with Twitch’s own controls. Never install a suggested “codec” or provide account secrets merely to get a public clip.
What should I save for a reliable stream archive?
Keep the video, a source link, stream date and title, and a separate chat file if you need one. Test the file offline, keep enough space for future recordings and make another copy of footage you cannot replace.
For your own channel, enable VOD storage before going live and download important streams soon afterward. Do not let a 60-day headline hide the shorter life of a particular quality or format.
For occasional clips, the official Clip controls are the simplest starting point. Move to TwitchDownloader when trimming, long recordings or chat preservation are the real requirement, then verify the finished files on the device where you will watch them.
