To watch Netflix without Wi-Fi or mobile data, download an eligible title in the Netflix app on a supported phone or tablet, then play it from Downloads on that same device. A saved title is for viewing inside Netflix; it is not an MP4 you can move into Photos or copy to a USB drive.
The most useful preparation happens before you leave home: choose the episodes you actually need, let them finish downloading, check the audio and subtitles, and confirm their availability. If you are packing a Windows laptop or Mac, check the device table first—streaming support does not mean offline downloads are supported.
Which devices support Netflix downloads?
| Device | Official offline download support | What to use |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone / iPad | Yes, on compatible devices | The current Netflix app |
| Android phone / tablet | Yes, on compatible devices | The current Netflix app |
| Amazon Fire tablet | Yes, on compatible devices | Netflix on the tablet, not Fire TV |
| Chromebook | On supported models with Google Play Store | The Netflix Android app |
| Windows PC / Mac / TV | No official download workflow on these platforms | Stream online, or prepare downloads on a supported mobile device |
Update Netflix and your operating system before a trip. Some older systems can still open an app but no longer support all download features. For a Chromebook, having a browser alone is not enough: the supported Android app and Google Play Store are the relevant route.
The current Windows Netflix app no longer supports downloads. Reinstalling it or looking for the old Downloads tab will not restore the feature. A browser shortcut on a Mac is also not an offline Netflix app. Choose your travel device before committing time to downloading a whole season.
Missing downloads and Windows support
Download and watch on iPhone, iPad or Android
- Connect the device you will take with you to Wi-Fi, open Netflix and sign in. Use the profile you expect to watch with, especially when preparing a child’s device.
- Open the title’s details and look for the downward download arrow. To browse eligible titles, open Downloads and choose See What You Can Download. Depending on the app layout, Downloads may be under My Netflix.
- For a film, select Download. For a series, choose the arrow beside the episode you want. If Download Season is offered, use it only after checking how many episodes you need and how much space is available.
- Wait for the download to finish. Open Downloads, check that the selected episodes are present and choose Play. A title added to My List or a partly completed progress indicator is not an offline copy.
- When you are offline, open Netflix and return to Downloads on that same device. Stay signed in. Check the title’s audio and subtitle choices before departure rather than assuming the streaming choices will all be available offline.
Plan around the episode you will watch next, not just the show’s name. A downloaded first episode will not help if you already watched it and the next one is still waiting for Wi-Fi.
How to download titles to watch offline

Download limits and expiration
Saved titles
Netflix lists up to 100 active downloads per device for ad-free plans, within your plan’s download-device allowance. This is a storage count, not a promise that every title can be downloaded.
Monthly downloads
Where an ad-supported plan is offered, Netflix limits it to 15 downloads per device per calendar month. The counter resets on the first day of the month; deleting a watched episode does not provide a fresh monthly allowance. Check your account for the plan and device allowance available in your country.
Expiration and renewal
Downloads expire, and some titles have licensing limits on repeat downloads. Use the expiration message in the app rather than assuming that every film has the same number of days or hours. A title that has left Netflix cannot be renewed by downloading it again.
Netflix says ‘Download Max Reached’
Downloaded title says ‘Expired’
For a long journey, choose downloads close enough to departure to check their status, while leaving enough time for Wi-Fi transfers and troubleshooting. Renew only when you have internet access. Do not treat downloading as a permanent library or a way to keep watching after your subscription ends.
Quality, storage and Smart Downloads
Choose quality for the screen and available space
Open My Netflix, tap the profile name at the top, then App Settings > Download Video Quality (or Video Quality). Standard takes less time and space; High/Higher can reach up to 1080p where the device and title support it. A Premium streaming plan is not a promise of 4K downloads.
Find the downloads in Netflix
Use the app’s Downloads area, not the browser’s Downloads folder. If storage is tight, remove watched episodes first. On supported Android or Fire devices with an SD card, Netflix’s Download Location setting can direct future downloads to the card; it does not turn them into shareable video files.
Use automatic downloads only when they fit the trip
Download Next Episode replaces watched episodes with the next one over Wi-Fi. Downloads for You selects recommendations and lets you allocate storage. These Smart Downloads features are not available on ad-supported plans. For a specific flight playlist, manually selecting episodes is easier to audit than relying on recommendations.

Fix common Netflix download problems
No download arrow for one title
Try a different title that appears in the downloadable section. If other titles work, the issue may be that title’s download rights. Netflix Originals are not a guarantee either: rights can involve other owners. A missing arrow is not necessarily an app fault.
No downloads on a Windows computer
This is expected with the current Windows app. Error VC2-CV1-ER also points to the discontinued offline feature. Prepare the film on a supported mobile device instead of repeatedly reinstalling Windows Netflix.
The monthly limit or device limit is reached
Read the whole message. A monthly ad-plan limit requires waiting for the reset or choosing a suitable different plan. A device-limit message can be addressed through Account > Manage Download Devices by removing downloads from a device you no longer use. Confirm whose downloads will be deleted first.
The download is stuck or storage is full
Check free space and a working Wi-Fi connection, then try one short episode instead of a season. Update the app and restart the device. If Netflix is set to Wi-Fi Only, mobile data will not start the download. Keep the exact error code if the issue continues.
The title says Expired
Reconnect to the internet and follow the renewal or download-again option. Netflix may ask you to delete the expired copy and download it again. On iPhone or iPad, also check that the system date and time are correct. If the title has left the catalogue or reached its renewal limit, downloading again will not solve it.
Previously downloaded titles disappeared
Check whether you changed to a restricted Kids profile, removed an SD card, reset the app or cleared its data. Uninstalling Netflix and storage-cleaner apps can remove downloads. Do not make a reinstall your first troubleshooting step when you are already offline.
Netflix says ‘You have downloads on too many devices.’
Troubleshoot a failed download
Before you travel: an offline checklist
- Check Downloads on the device you are actually taking, including every episode you need.
- Check expiration, battery level and free storage before leaving Wi-Fi.
- Confirm the correct profile, preferred subtitles and audio.
- Keep the account signed in; avoid clearing Netflix data or running storage-cleanup tools.
- If you briefly test offline playback, remember that starting a title may affect its viewing window; recheck its expiry afterward.
- Keep one alternative eligible title ready in case the one you wanted is unavailable.
Frequently asked questions
Where are Netflix downloads saved on iPhone?
They are managed inside the Netflix app. Open Downloads to play or delete them. They will not appear as ordinary films in Photos or Files, so searching those apps is not a useful way to check whether an episode finished.
Can I move a download to another phone or a USB drive?
The official workflow plays the download on the device that saved it. Download the title again in Netflix on another eligible device if your plan permits. An SD card is a storage option on supported devices, not an export or transfer method.
Can I watch in airplane mode?
That is the purpose of a completed, valid offline download. Prepare it while online, keep Netflix signed in and open it from Downloads. Resolve any account or renewal prompt before the flight rather than relying on airport Wi-Fi at the last minute.
Is offline downloading free?
It is a feature of an eligible paid Netflix membership, not a separate free movie-download service. Available plans, prices and download-device allowances depend on your country and account. Use your Netflix account’s plan details rather than a price quoted for another region.
Can an online video downloader save Netflix as MP4?
Netflix’s official downloads do not offer MP4 export. Public-video download tools are a different category and are not an established substitute for this app workflow. Do not paste Netflix passwords or session cookies into a third-party downloader.
Will cancelling Netflix let me keep the downloads?
Do not plan on that. Netflix says downloads are removed when the account is cancelled, and restarting membership requires downloading again. For future trips, check that membership and title availability cover the dates you need.
For dependable offline viewing, use a supported mobile device, select a manageable batch of titles and check Downloads before leaving a connection. If something fails, identify whether it is a title-rights, device, monthly-limit or storage issue first. That distinction saves more time than trying several unrelated downloaders.
