Santander and Mastercard run Europe’s first AI-executed payment pilot

Santander and Mastercard have successfully completed Europe’s first pilot of an AI-executed payment, marking a significant milestone in the evolution of autonomous financial transactions. This project demonstrates how artificial intelligence agents can be empowered to carry out real-time payments across borders and within corporate ecosystems without direct human intervention for every individual transaction, provided they operate within defined risk and governance frameworks.

The technology integration combines Santander’s banking infrastructure with Mastercard’s global payment rails to allow AI models to analyze data, make decisions, and settle funds autonomously. By shifting from a human-in-the-loop to a human-on-the-loop model, the pilot aims to drastically reduce the administrative burden of high-volume financial tasks and minimize friction in global commerce. This approach allows businesses to set specific parameters, enabling AI bots to manage liquidity and execute payments based on real-time business needs.

Beyond operational efficiency, the pilot explores the security implications of AI-driven finance. Mastercard and Santander are testing advanced verification methods to ensure that AI agents are authenticated and their actions remain traceable and compliant with existing financial regulations. This initiative sets the groundwork for a future where autonomous machines can engage in economic activity, potentially transforming supply chain management, inventory replenishment, and automated bill settlements.
